This grant will provide continued support of Professor Tom Rogers and his
team at Imperial College, London and their important work on Aspergillosis
as a major cause of illness in individuals with CGD. With CGDRT funding
the group have made some important discoveries about the genes that regulate
the growth of the mould fungi Aspergillus and this has led to the group
attracting over half a million pounds in funding from the Biotechnology
and Biological Science Research Council to continue this excellent work.
This year, the CGDRT will be funding a complementary project to develop a model system that will specifically mimic the Aspergillus infection process seen in CGD patients. The work will find out more about how the healthy immune system clears Aspergillus lung infections and how and why the response of CGD patients differs from this and causes severe problems. Using this approach it may be possible to develop immunological treatments that boost CGD patients' immunity to Aspergillus infection. It is hoped these treatments would complement currently available antifungal drug treatments and give CGD sufferers the chance of a better quality of life and the future possibility of undergoing a completely curative treatment by either bone marrow transplantation or gene therapy. Our medical panel found high merit in this work and thought this project would give important insights into invasive aspergillosis that should benefit CGD patients in the future.
